C&C is currently serving on the DMJM-Harris Joint Venture team for the design of Phase III of the Silver Line Transitway, passing through Chinatown in Downtown Boston. This project will create a tunnel for a hybrid bus line connecting the Massachusetts Medical Center to South Station. This missing link will complete the state-of-the-art guideway connecting Roxbury to Logan Airport, a distance of about 6 miles.
We completed a pre-design inspection of the foundations and utility connections for over 150 buildings abutting the proposed routes of the tunnel in addition to inspection reports, foundation plans and details, and pictures of existing conditions with the design managers. This material will be used by the designers to ensure no impact to buildings along the route.
We also completed an assignment to coordinate the clearance of utility infrastructure at several locations along the proposed routes to facilitate access shafts for construction of the tunnels themselves. This assignment has involved us in design of the utilities and coordination with the various utility companies serving downtown Boston.
We are currently working on an assignment to research and document the presence of wood pile-supported foundations under buildings within a one-block distance from the route of the proposed tunnel. Extra care will be required to prevent groundwater draw-downs in those areas during construction, which could result in rotting of the piles and settlement of the buildings.
