C&C Consulting Engineers, LLC, is a member of the team selected by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Highway Division responsible for providing preliminary engineering services for the replacement of the Whittier Bridge in Amesbury, Massachusetts. This project is part of the Commonwealth’s Accelerated Bridge Program, a $3 billion endeavor to rehabilitate, replace, and repair approximately 250 bridges throughout the Commonwealth.
The primary goal of this design contract is to prepare the preliminary design package for MassDOT to use for the Design-Build team procurement. The Design-Build project will replace the John Greenleaf Whittier Memorial Bridge over the Merrimack River. Built in 1951, the Whittier Bridge is a “swinging” deck/through truss bridge modeled after the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges over the Cape Cod Canal. The new bridge will have 4 traffic lanes, a break-down lane, and a high speed shoulder in each direction. These improvements will allow for much more travel capacity and will significantly increase driver safety.
The replacement of this major crossing over the Merrimack River will also include significant geometric improvements on the approaches along I-95 and the widening of mainline bridges over local roads. C&C’s role on this project includes the structural study reports for improvements to 5 bridges on the approach roads and preliminary design for widening of two mainline bridges.
